DURATION: 1/2 day      COST: Q 250 per person (minimum five people)

(includes local indigenous guides, all meals, snacks, transportation, entrance fees, and plenty of good stories about Mayan culture and Guatemalan history for the trails…)

We begin hiking in the town of Llanos del Pinal, just outside the city of Xela. Ascending for two and a half hours through community farmlands and pine forests, we finally reach the mirador in time for breakfast. From our lookout point beneath Volcán Santa María, we gaze down at Volcán Santiaguito, admiring the rocky volcano with its otherwordly, cone-shaped mounds. If we're lucky, Santiaguito will entertain us with several explosive eruptions! Our cameras filled with pictures and bellies filled with breakfast, we head down the trail to hop on a bus back to Xela.
